INTRODUCTION

Content design is about creating user-focused and accessible web content that’s easy to find and understand.

Content Design 101 is an introductory content design course for beginners.

You’ll learn about foundational topics and get practical skills that you can use in your job, or to help kickstart your content design career.

This course includes pre-recorded video presentations of 5 core modules and a resources download that includes all the links from the slides.



AT THE END OF THIS COURSE YOU’LL:

  • understand what content design is
  • be able to work through a content design process and produce user-centred web content
  • have experience using tools that content designers use regularly
  • take away skills that you can use to enhance your current job, or develop to specialise and become a content designer.

This content design course is for beginners and anyone looking to learn the basics of content design. Ideally you’d have some web or content experience already, but this isn’t necessary.

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN


This course includes 5 core modules:

1. What is content design?

You’ll learn about:

  • what content design is
  • what you do as a content designer and what skills are needed
  • the ‘design’ aspect of content design
  • the content design process
  • who you work with
  • the challenges you might face and ways to overcome these.

2. Research and learning about our users

You’ll learn about:

  • making your web content user-focused
  • the discovery/research phase
  • how you can learn about the people using a website
  • discovering the language and terms people know and use
  • user needs and writing user stories.

3. Creating accessible and data-driven content

You’ll learn about:

  • the importance of web accessibility and things you can do yourself to make sure web content is accessible
  • using data and analytics to guide your decisions and improve web content.

4. Importance of plain English and structure

You’ll learn about:

  • how people read online
  • how to structure web content
  • why we should use plain English
  • checking the readability of your web content
  • using style guides to create consistent web content.
     

5. Reviewing and testing content

You’ll learn about:

  • peer reviews and read-alouds
  • getting your content approved
  • information architecture basics and how to test it
  • the importance of continuous improvement after you’ve published.

At the end of the course you’ll:

  • understand what content design is
  • be able to work through a content design process and produce user-centred web content
  • have experience using tools that content designers use regularly
  • take away skills that you can use to enhance your current job, or develop to specialise and become a content designer.

ABOUT YOUR TRAINER

SARA GREIG

Sara Greig is the founder and director of Content Design NZ. She has extensive experience as a writer, firstly as a journalist before moving into the digital space and specialising as a content designer.

Sara’s passionate about web accessibility and using data to improve content. She has a professional certificate in web accessibility from the University of South Australia.

Sara has been:

  • a senior web content advisor at the Ministry of Health, working on COVID-19 vaccine web content
  • the lead content designer at Oranga Tamariki, The Ministry for Children
  • a content designer and product owner for Govt.nz, an award winning Plain English website
  • a content designer for digital.govt.nz
  • a New Zealand web standards advisor.
